Mulch, Pine Straw, Wheat Straw

Atlanta landscaping almost always needs a material to cover bare soil for aesthetic value, to control erosion, to aid in the control of weed growth and minimize the rapid loss of moisture. The preferred organic choices for Atlanta landscaping are pine straw, hardwood mulch and pine bark nuggets.

Newly planted lawns often use wheat straw as a ground cover to protect germinating seeds and tender young grass. All of these landscape ground covers, if installed at least 2" thick, will protect plant roots from potential damage due to freezing weather. Our landscape material professionals can help you to find the best material for your application however the following information will help you to understand the special qualities of each ground cover material.

Pine Straw is an inexpensive and natural way to protect your bedding plants, shrubs and add a professional appearance to your landscaping. Pine straw is a completely organic covering that is acceptable for general applications however it is particularly good for plants that thrive in acidic soils such as camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, fuchsias, gardenias, magnolias and most evergreens. Pine straw is almost always sold in bales and available year round.

Hardwood Mulches are slightly more expensive than pine straw however these decorative mulches are generally perceived as having higher aesthetic value than pine straw while providing the same functional values as pine straw.

Hardwood mulches can be acquired in several colors ranging from natural (blond) to red, brown or black. Hardwood mulches last longer than pine straw although colored mulches will lose their dyed color as they age. Hardwood mulches are sold "loose" and can be loaded onto your vehicle or delivered in bulk to your location.

Wheat Straw, is a very inexpensive material to cover bare ground however the aesthetic value is minimal. Wheat straw is almost always sold in bales and available year round. Wheat straw is typically used as a temporary ground cover.

Pine Bark Nuggets, an alternative to mulch or straw, are suitable for most landscape applications however by comparison pine bark nuggets may be more attractive to insects. Pine bark nuggets are subject to displacement from runoff water on sloped ground. Pine bark nuggets are available in bags or "loose" for bulk purchases.

Pine Straw

Pine Straw is an inexpensive ground cover sold in bales that is typically used in landscape bedding, particularly for plants thriving in acidic soil (i.e., azaleas, gardenias, etc.). It is an excellent way to help retain soil moisture, and provide a decorative ground covering for large landscaped areas.

Wheat Straw

Wheat Straw, sometimes called Hay, is an inexpensive ground cover sold in bales that is typically used to cover newly seeded lawns to minimize loss of moisture and to protect tender grass sprouts. Wheat straw may also be spread over bare soil, or used in whole bales in ditches, to minimize erosion from water runoff.
